چکیده
Abstract With brighter synchrotron sources, automated sample changers, and faster detectors, there is a strong scientific need for rapid precise variation of the X-ray beam profile, rather than “set forget” operation years past. Piezoelectric bimorph deformable mirrors already allow quick profile changes without heat generation wear mechanical devices. Now, their early technological limitations – excessively constraining holders, progressive “junction effect” distortion, communication bottlenecks with power supplies are being overcome by collaboration scientists engineers both in industry at Diamond Light Source. A new maintains stable figure over extended periods operation. Improved holders flexible electrical connectors greatly reducing strain imparted to bimorphs, thereby improving speed, accuracy, stability. more sophisticated high voltage supply has on-board signal processing capacity, allowing large focusing within seconds providing programmable time-varying profiles counteract piezoelectric creep. The between beamline systems freed now runs stably up 1 Hz. Early tests have shown that can repeatedly switch size an well under 10 seconds. Bimorph beamlines growing beyond largely static past gaining dynamism through development projects advanced. We report on how these endeavours will make it easier utilise full potential mirrors.

Characterization of a next-generation piezo bimorph X-ray mirror for synchrotron beamlines
Piezo bimorph mirrors are versatile active optics used on many synchrotron beamlines. However, many bimorphs suffer from the `junction effect': a periodic deformation of the optical surface which causes major aberrations to the reflected X-ray beam. This effect is linked to the construction of such mirrors, where piezo ceramics are glued directly below the thin optical substrate. In order to ad...

The unique properties of synchrotron radiation are its continuous spectrum, high flux and brightness, and high coherence, which make it an indispensable tool in the exploration of matter. The wavelengths of the emitted photons span a range of dimensions from the atomic level to biological cells, thereby providing incisive probes for advanced research in materials science, physical and chemical ...
متن کاملSegmented bimorph mirrors for adaptive optics: segment design and experiment.
We discuss the concept of lightweight segmented bimorph mirrors for adaptive optics. The segment consists of a monocrystal silicon substrate actuated by an array of in-plane piezoceramic (PZT) actuators with honeycomb electrodes. We focus on technological aspects of the segment design that are critical for space applications and describe a single segment demonstrator. The morphing capability of...
متن کاملOptical Beamlines for the KEK B-Factory Synchrotron Radiation Monitors
We have designed and constructed two optical beamlines for the KEK B-Factory synchrotron radiation monitors, one for each ring. Each beamline transports the SR beam 30-40 meters to an external optics hutch along two parallel paths. One path is used for direct imaging with adaptive optics[1], the other is used for transverse beam size measurements via SR interferometer[2] and longitudinal profil...
متن کاملThe First Synchrotron Infrared Beamlines at the Advanced Light Source: Spectromicroscopy and Fast Timing
Two recently commissioned infrared beamlines on the 1.4 bending magnet port at the Advanced Light Source, LBNL, are described. Using a synchrotron as an IR source provides three primary advantages: increased brightness, very fast light pulses, and enhanced far-IR flux. The considerable brightness advantage manifests itself most beneficially when performing spectroscopy on a microscopic length s...
